Visa Programme Overview

The Significant Investor Visa (Sub-class 188, 4 years)

Launched in November 2012, the Significant Investor Stream 188 Visa programme has seen around 2,000 high net worth individuals and families from across the world obtain residency in Australia, and mostly in Victoria. As of 2019, the majority of applicants hail from China, however the programme is also increasingly popular among South Africans, Malaysians and Hong Kong nationals.

The programme seeks to attract foreign investment in the business innovation sector. Applicants must meet a list of stringent requirements, including being nominated by the Australian Trade (AUSTRADE) Commission, or an Australian State or territory government.

A minimum capital investment of AUD $5 million must be made into an approved investment over a period of 4 years, and investors must spend a minimum of 40 days per year in-country throughout their residency. Alternatively, their spouse must reside in-country of a minimum of 180 days a year.

English proficiency is a requirement, however no country quotas are enforced, and no investment is required up until pre-approval is received.

The visa is issued for a period of 4 years, and serves as the first step towards permanent investment immigration to Australia. After 4 years, applicants can apply to extend their temporary residency to 8 years.

Why Choose The Australia Investor Visa

As a second country residency jurisdiction, Australia is an excellent choice for South Africans. The following are just a few of the reasons more well-heeled South Africans are choosing to emigrate to Australia:

Quality of life: In terms of its quality of life, Australia ranks among the world’s top second residency destinations. The country has some of the lowest air pollution levels in the world, and given that English is the national language, migrating to Australia is far less challenging than to countries in which cultural and language barriers are material considerations.

Personal safety: For investors from countries where stability is compromised, Australia offers a stable socio-economic and political environment in which to restart their lives.

World class healthcare: Australia scores high against international healthcare standards, making it an excellent choice for families with young children.

Acclaimed education system: An Australian education is the key to a brighter future. From primary school to tertiary education level, the country is sought after as a place to study.

Financial stability: Given its stable and robust policy framework, more businesses are establishing a footprint in Australia as a hedge against market uncertainties in their native jurisdictions.

Natural beauty and diversity: Given its sheer geographic size, the country is incredibly diverse, and is increasingly becoming popular as an international travel destination.

Cultural integration: Within Australia’s expat communities, South Africans are well represented. Australians are generally very welcoming towards foreigners, and new residents face far fewer social integration challenges than in a host of other countries running investment residency and Golden Visa type programmes.
