The 188C Significant Investor Visa (SIV) at a glance
The 188C Visa Program is only open to applicants who have been nominated by an Australian Territory government or state. In order to be nominated, the applicant must lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the Skill Select system. The 188C is a 4-year temporary visa, issued on the basis of the applicant having made an AUD 5 million investment in Australia.
Once this investment has been maintained for a minimum period of 4 years, the applicant can become eligible to apply for permanent residency through the Business Innovation and Investment (Residence) 888 Visa sub-class.
The 188C SIV stream offers a range of benefits to high net worth foreign investors. For starters, there is no age limitations, nor is English language proficiency required. Unlike with other Australian investor visas such as the 188A, 188B and 132 Visa streams, you also don’t need to hold any formal tertiary qualification.
Your 188C Visa application is not subject to a points-based test. You don’t need to have any business management experience, nor do you have to be actively involved in managing your investment. This makes the program a very attractive option for investors seeking a low-involvement, passive investment solution.
The processing time for the 188C Visa is also significantly faster than for the 188A, 188B and 132 SIV streams; the 188C is typically processed in around 12 months, compared to a period of 17 to 24 months for the other visa streams.
In contrast to the 132 Visa Program, the minimum investment period for the 188C Visa is 4 years, compared to 2 years.
