9. Norway Digital Nomad Visa (Svalbard)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The Norwegian Digital Nomad Visa is actually a broader residency visa. The program is unique in many respects: for starters, it doesn’t expire, and all nationalities are eligible to apply for it. Thirdly, it’s not valid for Norway itself, only for Svalbard, an archipelago situated north of Norway.

While Svalbard is incredibly (if starkly) beautiful, it is one of the coldest places on earth, and for up to three months per year, there is virtually no sun. Combined with very expensive living costs, it’s no surprise that this is not a destination where digital nomads reside for long periods of time.

KEY REQUIREMENTS: Proof of adequate financial means to support yourself, proof of comprehensive health insurance, and proof of accommodation in Svalbard.

VISA VALIDITY: No expiry date.

10. Portugal D7 Passive Income Visa Program

GET IN TOUCH

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: Portugal is an excellent location for digital nomads, offering world class beaches, friendly locals and mouthwatering cuisine – at some of the lowest prices in Europe. The Portuguese D7 Visa Program is popular among wealthy retirees earning stable passive income, in particular, but is increasingly also drawing interest from high-earning location-independent workers earning sufficient passive income.

It is highly to work with a Portuguese immigration firm specializing in the D7 Visa, as a large margin of government discretion applies, and the rejection rate for independently submitted applications tends to be very high.

KEY REQUIREMENTS: As with the Italian financially independent visa, you will also be required to prove either that own a suitable residential property, or that you have a long-term rental lease in the country.

In addition, the minimum passive income requirements are as follows: €635 per month / €7,620 per year (individual applicant), and an additional €318 per month / €3,810 for your spouse or partner. For every dependent child under the age of 18, an additional €191 in passive income is required per month (so €2,286 per dependent child per year).

VISA VALIDITY: Similar to the Italian Elective Residency Program, the D7 Visa is initially issued for 12 months, after which it is renewable at 2-year intervals.
