About the proposed Greek Investment Passport Program

The Greek passport is ranked as one of the world’s top 10 travel documents, giving the holder visa-free access to over 180 countries.

The passport program is currently being developed by the new right leaning government, and it is expected that the program will be launched towards the end of the first quarter in 2020.

Whereas the Cypriot program requires a real estate investment of €2 million excluding VAT or more, informed sources say that the Greek program is likely to feature a minimum investment requirement of €2.5 million. VAT on Greek Golden Passport investments will be deferred for a period of 3 years, however, which means that the investment costs for both these program will essentially be the same upon application.

According to local media reports, the program is expected to feature strict requirements, and investors will be required to transfer at least €2 million into a Greek bank account upfront.

Also, it is anticipated that the Greek investment passport program will only be issued to approximately 200 non-EU investors per year.

The programs will seek to build on the success of the Greek Golden Visa Program, which to date has proven to be one of the most popular investment residency programs in the world, especially among Asian investors seeking to establish a footprint in Schengen Europe.

The Cypriot programs has attracted over €4 billion in foreign investments, and it is expected that the Greek program will be even more popular.

Greece has the added benefit of being situated in Mainland Europe, whereas the island nation of Cyprus is far more isolated geographically. Another key advantage is that Greek passport holders do not require a visa to travel to the USA, making it the ideal travel document for business professionals involved in cross-Atlantic trade.
